We had the pleasure of chatting with Sylvia Kyriacou to learn more about the Shinny Sisters!
The Shinny Sisters have a great story. Can you share how the team got started?
It all started when I met Evelyn in Jasper. Both hockey moms at the time, naturally, we talked hockey. Discovering we both wanted to play, we recruited our friends and their friends. 20 years later we are still going strong.
What has been a highlight for you over these past 20 years?
For myself, the highlight has to be the sheer enjoyment. Staying fit and making new lifelong friends along the way.
Tell us about the friendships that have developed over the years through the team!
The friendships have grown to be a great support system for all of us. Whether it be illness or celebrating new grandkids, everyone is there for one another.
How are yourself and members of the team role models for others (like your children, family, and/or friends)?
For most of us, staying active at our age, 50s to mid-60s, shows our children and grandchildren the importance of staying active. Hockey is a sport that can bring a community together.
What advice do you have for someone who is interested in trying hockey or getting involved on a team?
First off, don’t let the sport intimidate you. There are many beginner teams out there. Find a shinny team that has all the skill levels. From there you will be directed to the right path in finding a team for your needs. Most women say to me ‘I can’t skate’. The best place to learn is on the ice in full gear.
