Vawn is a hockey village. It started many years ago with the outdoor hockey rink, and continues to this day with the outdoor hockey rink. It was the birthplace of the Vawn Three Stars senior mens hockey club- that has now moved down the highway to Edam’s indoor rink. Vawn is also home to “The Moccasin Goalie” author Bill Brownridge. Bill’s paintings and stories are based on his experiences growing up in Vawn.
We have just recently replaced our outdoor rink with a new, bigger rink that will last for many years. The rink replacement was a community event. We all came together to tear down the old rink. Once it was demolished a community group levelled out the lot the rink was on and packed it with gravel. We then came back together as a community to assemble the new rink, and put in the ice. The boards are up, the ice is in, and final completion (including put up the lights, painting, installing the backstops) will take place in the spring when the ground thaws.
The rink is a very busy place and used for skating, shinny games, birthday parties, and community get togethers. We also have a picnic area with firepit, toboggan hill, and warm up shack where the rink is located. It is conveniently also right across the street from the Community Hall.
