PCU Park is a beautiful space in the heart of Porcupine Plain’s downtown, providing the perfect space for residents and visitors to connect. The Park is frequently host to fundraisers for community organizations, as well as to barbeques and other events sponsored by local businesses. It is a great spot to sit down for lunch or an ice cream cone, have a picnic, or play on the grass; in the winter, you can enjoy quality time with your family on the Outdoor Rink.
The PCU Park ODR truly is a labour of love, as it has taken many volunteers and donors over the years to make it what it is today — Affinity Credit Union purchased a shed, Parkland Co-op donated insulation, and Altitude Electric donated wiring for spotlights and heaters, to create a warmup shack for the outdoor rink; staff from the Affinity and Parkland Co-op, along with members of the Porcupine Plain & District Volunteer Fire Department, give generously of their time each year to maintain the ice; in 2021, through fundraising efforts and donations, cement was installed to make it easier to prepare the ice, as well as to make the space useable for rollerblading or roller hockey in the summer; in early 2023, the Porcupine Plain Comprehensive School’s Grade 10 Welding Class built and installed boards to avoid pucks hitting vehicles or buildings around it; and, in December 2023, Nutrien donated a solar light, which was installed generously by Altitude Electric and Marv Pickering Bobcat Services, in order to light the ODR up after dark.
It is a fantastic thing to see community members and businesses team up for such a great project — such spaces are important not only for town beautification, but for residents’ enjoyment of and pride in our community.
