Men have been playing pickup hockey during the workday for years. Fourteen years ago we decided our rural community needed the same opportunity for women. The first years were slow, with sometimes only enough for 3-on-3. Now every Tuesday we have up to 20 ladies playing hockey. Our players range in age (from students to retirees) and in profession (from farmers to nurses). Twice a year we go out for lunch. We have shared illness, job loss, parenting parents, pandemic struggles and all of the joys too. Hockey brings women together in the country!
